Sandy Springs History

Originally home to the Creek Indian Settlement, Wilson Spruill purchased land in Sandy Springs in 1842. North of Atlanta, Sandy Springs acquired its name from the spring that bubbles up from a sandy hole. To this day, the protected historic site produces 10 gallons of water per minute. The establishment of the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church in 1851 paved the way for the log cabins that would define the area as a quiet farm community until well into the 20th century. In the 1960s and 70s, the construction of highways afforded easy access to the city and the area experienced a boom in construction and growth.
